Party Season and Personal Safety

Alert message sent 12/12/2019 14:44:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

'Tis the season to be jolly!  We are all prone to a party or two at this time of year, and this is a perfect time of year to make merry.  Stay merry by staying safe.  Here are a few helpful ideas to help your party season go with a bang!

Please, the last thing police aim to be are killjoys, and we want you to have fun - but safely.  Take the same common sense precautions you would do if you were at home.
  • Consider installing a personal safety App on your mobile phone - there are many available.
  • Plan your journey before you go out, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area. It is worthwhile investing in a street map of your local area or check the route online.
  • Don’t flash your tech! Be discreet when using mobile phones and iPads in public to avoid drawing attention.
  • Only take with you what is necessary. Don’t be tempted to carry unnecessary cash and valuables such as cameras and laptops if you have no intention of using them.
  • When out on your own, don’t be tempted to take shortcuts through parks, alleys or subways. Stick to well-lit, busy streets.
  • Don’t walk home on your own late at night. Walk with a friend, book a taxi or use public transport.
  • If you must walk alone let a friend know what route you are taking and what time you will arrive home. Text them when you do get back safely so they don't need to send out a search party!
  • If you suspect trouble, walk away.
  • Always book a taxi, never hail one in the street.
  • Students:  If you have to use the library late at night or have a late lecture, make sure someone knows where you are, what time you will get back home and how to contact you.
Alcohol:
  • Know your limits and be responsible if you go out drinking. You are more likely to put yourself at risk if you are under the influence of alcohol. Have a buddy with you that remains sober
  • Alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks.
  • Don’t accept drinks from people you do not know and never leave a drink unattended.
  • Go out in a group and watch out for each other during the night. Make sure you all get home safely.
  • If you suspect your drink has been spiked, speak to a member of staff immediately.
  • If trouble starts, walk away.
  • Never walk home alone if you have been drinking alcohol.
