Christmas Security

Alert message sent 14/12/2020 13:45:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

With Christmas just around the corner I would like to remind residents of some simple things you can do to protect yourself against criminals that are looking to take advantage of this time of year.

When Shopping:
Make sure your handbag is closed and position it so a pick-pocket would find it difficult to get into without you knowing. After buying an item do not move away from the till area until you have safely put your purse away and zipped up your hand bag. Keep wallets in an inside pocket and out of sight.
Be aware of the people around you and people getting unnecessarily close to you. Some criminals may try to distract you in order to take your belongings. Never leave a bag unattended in a trolley, even if for a couple of seconds.

At home:
Don’t tempt a thief by leaving presents on display in your car or in your home.
If you store bigger items, such as bikes, in your shed or garage make sure you have strong locks fitted.
Thieves are more likely to target homes which appear unoccupied, therefore if you go out in the dark leave a couple of lights on in your home (or use timer switches) to make it look occupied. You can also leave the radio on and draw the curtains to stop opportunist thieves looking in.
Please remember that if your doors and windows are not secure, then neither is your home or possessions.
I would like to wish everyone a happy and peaceful (and crime-free) Christmas and New Year
