Cold Callers

Alert message sent 30/11/2019 15:48:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Dear Resident,

Please be aware that Police have received several reports of groups of door-to-door sellers who have become aggressive on a number of occasions this week.

The incidents took place in the Liss and Liss Forest Area.

One resident reported that she had opened her door to a man in his late 20s, with a large black rucksack from which he was trying to sell products. The man had a piece of paper which showed he was on a rehabilitation programme and was trying to improve his life.

The resident did not but any products.

Not always but more than likely these people will carry a large rucksack or duffel bag, they may show you a card saying they are deaf / dumb / just out of prison and are in the process of working towards a better life. This is an attempt to gain your trust, your sympathy and ultimately, get you to let your guard down.

The scam is believed to have started in Nottingham, hence the sellers becoming known as Nottingham Knockers. They will be supplied with products (usually household cleaning products) of very poor quality, by their 'employer', which they will then try to sell for very high prices. Any ID or work permits they carry are likely to be fake.

The sellers are often pushy and persistent and sometimes aggressive to try and make sales and some people will buy the products just to get rid of them. This is not a good idea as the more sales they get in a particular area, the more likely they are to return in the future.

Please follow the following advice in relation to doorstep callers: (Please share this information with your neighbours, friends and family)

Never allow a cold caller in to your home.
Always use the door chain when answering the door, if you are not sure don't open the door.
Always check the credentials of unknown callers. Do not phone the number on the ID card, use a phone book or a bill.
Never buy from cold-calling doorstep traders or engage with cold callers on the phone.
Do not keep substantial sums of money in the home.
Always keep front and back doors locked, even when you are home.
Keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable neighbours, friends and family.

If these people return to our area, please call the police on 101 with a description of them and any associated vehicle they may be using.
In an emergency, always use 999.

Regards, John.
