Keep yourself safe from distraction burglaries

Alert message sent 07/05/2021 14:56:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Afternoon all,

Our colleagues in Fareham have had a number of reports over the last 24 hours of suspicious incidents in the Stubbington and Hill Head areas of the district.

Residents have been telling us that a man driving a white van has been knocking on their door, purporting to work for Amazon, and asking them to confirm where they would like their parcels to be left when they are not at home.

Please be reassured that officers are following up these reports to establish the circumstances.

While we haven't received any reports of this nature in Portsmouth at this time, this is a timely reminder to encourage people to continue reporting suspicious incidents to us, and to read up on the crime prevention advice on our website to keep yourself safer.

In the majority of cases, people will knock on your door for a legitimate reason. However, if you’re ever concerned, do not let the person enter your home, close the door and give us a call on 101 so we can take a look at what’s happened.

There are a small handful of links below with some useful information which we encourage you to take a look at to enable you to keep yourself and your property safe.

The following page on our website will give you some insight into doorstep criminals, more specifically distraction burglary, with some videos from our Crime Prevention team to give you some advice: https://www.hampshire.police.uk/police-forces/hampshire-constabulary/areas/campaigns/2018/doorstep-criminals/

Burglary isn’t the only doorstep crime, however, as we do from time to time receive reports of fraud/scams. You can read up on these here: https://www.hampshire.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/fa/fraud/personal-fraud/door-to-door-courier-fraud/

In addition to all of the above, it’s important to consider what steps can be taken to secure your home where possible. The crime prevention page on our website contains lots of useful information about keeping your windows secure, protecting your house or flat, and also how to make your shed or garage safer.

Why not check it out? >>> https://www.hampshire.police.uk/cp/crime-prevention/

Thank you to those members of the community who have been bringing suspicious incidents to our attention. If something doesn’t feel right, then report it.
