Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Dear Business Community,

Your local policing team are working hard to learn with you. We understand that these are challenging times for many of you and that your businesses are working hard to support our community. I am writing to you to ensure that you prepared to be in the best possible position moving forward to help ensure you and your customers can meet the governmental social distance rules and prevent the spread of the virus, support our NHS and save lives.

By now you should have met our teams whom have been busy visiting you whilst on their patrol. We have witnessed such wonderful positive measures being introduced.

For those of you who are to remain open and continue trading we would like you to consider introducing the following best practice measures to prevent the spread of the virus, to keep your staff and customers safe:

• Limit the number of customers able to enter your stores at any given time, using staff to manage this as necessary
• Ensure your staff are able to work in an environment which is safe
• Consider the use of plastic screens at till points
• Tape the floor at two metre intervals inside and out to ensure customers adhere to social distancing
• Ensure that when staff are re stocking, the aisle they are working in are closed
• Use ‘SIA’ security officers to support staff and prevent/deter those who wish to cause harm to the business
• Use appropriate signage advising your customers of the measures which are in place

A number of you have raised concern following certain experiences of criminal behaviours which have caused unnecessary stress and anxiety for those operating and using your services.

It is so important that you feel confident enough to report this.

We're asking you please to only call 999 if it is an emergency and 101 if it is urgent. If you can, use our online services.

We want to hear from you, particularly if you have experienced the following:

• Assaults or threats of violence
• Racial abuse
• Threats of spreading of the virus

Your local policing team will:

• Seek to identify the person
• Gather evidence in relation to the offence
• Deal with the matter seeking the most appropriate outcome

If you’re looking for information about the government instruction to stay at home and how that may affect you, you'll find guidance on We’ll be updating information on our services over the coming days, please check online for those updates at

To further support you we would also suggest that you look at joining the Portsmouth Business Crime Reduction Partnership. This is a not for profit service which will allow staff to identify persons of risk to your premises by way of a database. For further information please look at

Our teams will be visible and are patrolling the community ensuring that businesses are supported during these challenging times. If you see us, please tell us what is affecting you.

We are Stronger Together.
