BOTLEY Pern Drive Suspicious Male Rogue Trading

Alert message sent 29/11/2019 18:52:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Dear Citizen ,

I'm sending this message to everyone within 0.5 mile radius of the incident.

Yesterday we had a report of a suspicious male being forceful about roof work that the male said needed doing. The report ref 44190428687 was - a male knocked a door in Pern Drive, Botley and said the roof needed replacing. The male would not take no for an answer and said he would return on Monday to carry out the work.

Please speak to your family, friends and neighbours, to help raise awareness of Doorstep crime. If you see a neighbour having work done, please take the time to check in with them, are they being put under pressure, or are they about to pay an extortionate price for the work?

Please be alert to Doorstep Crime. We use 'doorstep crime' to describe distraction burglary and rogue trading.
Offenders knock on the door and may pretend to be someone else. They may then:

• distract you to get in and steal items, sometimes with an accomplice
• pretend to have lost a pet
•claim they need to use your home phone
•claim they're from the council, a utility supplier (water or gas, for example) or even police
• claim your home needs some sort of work doing
• put pressure on you to have the work done asap

If you're not sure, don't open the door.

And always:
• lock all doors, even when at home
• use a chain or spy hole
• stop unknown people from entering
• tell the police about unwanted or suspicious callers by calling 101 or report online
• speak to friends and family about getting work done on your home
• never feel under pressure to agree to work without considering it carefully – anyone putting pressure on you is a big warning sign.
• get several quotes from different companies BEFORE you agree to go ahead with work

In our video below you can see Sarah Cohen, one of our crime prevention advisors, give a short introduction to preventing doorstep crime.
