Community Priority Update

Alert message sent 26/07/2019 22:50:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Hello I am your local PCSO Lee Gardner. Welcome to the latest update for the Centre beat area of Basingstoke consisting of Grove, Eastrop, Brookvale and Kings Furlong for the last couple of weeks.

Current Priorities

The three current priorities chosen by you for the Town Centre area are Residential Burglaries, Robberies and Cycle Theft. In the last fortnight there have been 5 Residential Burglaries, 3 reports of Robberies and 1 incident of Cycle theft. During the last month we have done 4 separate cycle security marking events in the Town Centre with the help from our partners within the Town and this has helped massively.

The joint public engagement of bike marking has been a huge success!

I would like to thank The Business Improvement District (BID) for financing this initiative of marking members of public cycles in the town Centre.

The police have now concluded the events having run four separate cycle marking pop up events in and around the vicinity of the town Centre under the BID umbrella concentrating where cycles are parked by users of the town’s facilities and businesses.
Prior to the event saw a rise in thefts of cycles in this area which in the last two months there have been none in the Business Improvement District footprint.

PCSO Gardner said, “It has been a huge success giving members of public the opportunity to have their bike marked professionally with QR code tamper proof stickers for free which has clearly assisted with the decrease in such thefts”.

It has been a wonderful opportunity to show how successful partnership working can be, on this occasion we would like to thank all of those partners involved. The Business Improvement District, Festival Place, The Malls, The Rail Station & Basingstoke and Deane Council for using their areas.

On this occasion we have used a company which many other police forces use which is free to register your cycle with other alternatives for security marking. www.bikeregister.com
We still always suggest that you use the best lock you can afford to deter thieves and ensure that your cycle is clearly marked.
Should the worse happen to have photographs along with distinguishing features, serial numbers etc. noted.

Crime Trends

Over the last 90 days three crimes that have seen the biggest increase are personal robberies, Residential burglaries & Possession of Offensive Weapons. To put this into context there have been 12 reported robberies in the last 90 days compared to 7 for the 90 days before that. There have been 12 reported Residential Burglaries in the last 90 days compared to 10 for the 90 days before that. Possession of Weapons has also increased from 10 incidents in the previous 90 days to 15 for the past 90 days.

The three crimes that have decreased the most over the same time period are Vehicle Offences, Cycle Theft and Shoplifting.

The Kings Furlong & Brookvale area has shown a largest decrease in crime over the last 90 days with only 190 reported incidents compared to 206 in the previous 90 days. Eastrop and the Grove have also slightly improved with 442 reported incidents in the last 90 days compared with 466 in the previous 90 days & 69 incidents compared to 72 respectively.
