Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Welcome to the first Bassett Newsletter this will outline what has took place over the Bassett Police Ward over the last month. There will be no specific addresses mention due to data protection but the below will give you a basic understanding on what’s gone on.

Burglaries we have had - 8 reported these range from garages being broken into and tools, cycles being stolen, mainly in the Bassett Ave area. As it’s now getting closer to the summer months please make sure windows & doors are fully secure.

Criminal Damage –11 reported this ranges from damage to property or personal belongings & parked vehicles. Public Order – 11 these are mainly being reported around the Hollybrook Road, Northbrook Industrial Estate. The Neighbourhood Police Team are in the process of dealing with this as its causing some tension within the Community who live there. Suspicious - reports 20 this could be anything from a member of public being concerned about a person or vehicle at a location. Theft from Vehicles - 11 –this is a current issue for us we are seeing an increase of reported incidents, mainly around the Bassett Ave area (see advice below). Theft of Vehicles -4 reported around Winchester Road and Sports Centre area surrounding roads.

Crime Prevention Please make sure your vehicles and garages are secured and nothing of value is left on display. The summer evenings are coming so when your children are out playing as you probably do already make sure they are visible and safe. I had a report on a previous occasion where children were out playing in the roads which caused concern.

Theft From Vehicles Advice-

There are measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim yourself, such as:

• When you leave your vehicle make sure the doors of your vehicle are locked and the windows
And sunroof are shut, no matter how hot the weather is.
• If possible, park your vehicle in a busy area. If you have a garage, use it.
• Do not leave anything in your vehicle, including the boot. A jacket or coat left behind may be of
Very little value to you, but a thief may think it has been used to hide a laptop or handbag and
Will break into your vehicle to find out.
• If you have a removable music system, take it with you.
• Make sure you do not leave documents which have your name on in your vehicle.
• Do not leave your sat-nav in your vehicle and don’t forget to remove the cradle and wipe the
Suction marks from your windscreen.

Garages and Sheds Advice-

There are certain measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim yourself,
Such as:

• Fit an alarm to your garage or shed – most DIY stores stock battery- operated alarms suitable
For this purpose.
• Always mark the property you keep in your garage or shed with your postcode – this will help
Identification if they are stolen and then recovered. Keep a list of property with photographs.
Register your property on www.immobilise.com.
• Make sure your garage or shed is fitted with a good strong lock, padlock, door hinges or other
Security device such as a Garage Defender.
• Make sure items inside the garage or shed are secure – large items can be padlocked together
Or you could sink a post into the floor of the garage and padlock items to the post.
• Always remember to lock your garage or shed after use.
• Do not store large quantities of valuables in your garage and shed.
• Keep property and fencing in good repair and ensure that foliage and trees are kept trimmed.
• Check with your insurance company that you are covered for items stored in your garage or
Shed.
