Local Update

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Dear Resident,

Hello! I am your local PC Emily Cooke and I am the dedicated officer who covers the West Beat area of Basingstoke which is made up of South Ham, Buckskin, Winklebury and Rooksdown.
This newsletter is an update for the past few weeks and includes information about crime and what we as a team have been focussing on.

Priorities:
The current priorities chosen by you in our area are burglaries, theft from vehicles and criminal damage.

There has been 1 burglary in South Ham and is believed to be an isolated crime and not part of a series or spree.
With summer rapidly creeping up on us please remember to be vigilant and not to leave any windows open or doors unlocked when you are not at home. We all relax in the warm weather but don’t let your guard down!
Please also be aware of reports of suspicious people knocking on doors claiming to be workmen as last summer we had some distraction burglaries with this being the method of gaining access to the house.
Always ask for ID if someone you are not expecting knocks on your door and keep an eye on vulnerable or elderly neighbours.

There have been 7 reports of theft from vehicles in the last fortnight. This is mainly in Warwick Road and a couple of surrounding streets in that area of Winklebury. Some of these reports are loose change and small items being taken from vehicles that have been unlocked. The rest of these incidents have been reports of tools being taken from vans whereby the locks have been tampered with to gain entry to the vehicle.
Think like thief and evaluate how you leave your vehicle overnight. Do I have valuables on show? Have I definitely locked my car?
We would also ask people to check their CCTV if you have any as this one of the best ways to identify offenders.

There has been an increase in reports of criminal damage, especially in the Rooksdown are. These are mostly related to damage to vehicles for example a windscreen has been smashed and a wing mirror broken off separate vehicles. Patrols by myself and local PCSOs will be increased in and around this area whenever we can.

We will continue to focus on the above issues whilst investigations are ongoing and evidence is gathered. We also increase patrols in the affected areas when and where we can. Please come and say hello if you see us out and about!

For Awareness:
There have been 2 robberies which happened on Buckland Avenue in South Ham. One of these was at the McColls on Buckland Parade in which a large amount of cash was taken.
Both of these incidents are still under investigation. If anyone has any information or lives in the area and has CCTV, please get in touch. You can call 101 or you can give the same information to Crimestoppers on 0800555111 if you wish to remain anonymous.

Useful Information:
Basingstoke Police have a Facebook page in which updates, information and advice is posted on a regular basis. Please follow us at Basingstoke Cops on the link www.facebook.com/Basingstokecops. We also post live updates of our patrols and events we are attending so is a great way to see what we are up to. We welcome comments and discussions on our page too!

If you cycle to work or into town then be aware there have been an increase in bike thefts around the shopping centre. www.immoblise.com is a free website where you can register and log personal property, including bicycles. This is used by us in Hampshire Constabulary and makes our job a lot easier when trying to reunite stolen property with owners.

You can now report crime online! If you want to report a crime or suspicious activity which does not require a 999 call then you can report it on our website at www.hampshire.police.uk. I know that sometimes people can be on hold for a while using 101, but these call takers also sometimes take the incoming emergency 999 calls. So please think of this when having to wait and use the online reporting tool if appropriate for your enquiry.

Kind Regards,
PC Emily Cooke
