Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

We wanted to highlight a court result to you.

Two people have each been sentenced to a ten-year prison sentence, half to be served on license, following the death of twenty four day-old baby Stanley Davis from Gosport.

On Wednesday 28 November at Winchester Crown Court 24 year-old Samuel Lloyd Davies of St Peters Road in Basingstoke and 30 year-old Roxanne Laura Davis of Lee Road in Gosport were both found guilty of an offence contrary to section 5 of the Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Act 2004 - causing or allowing the death of a child or vulnerable adult.
Today (December 7) at the same court Davies and Davis were each sentenced to a ten-year prison sentence, half to be served on license,
Twelve day-old Stanley from Garland Court was taken to hospital with bruising to his head on March 16 2017. Stanley was then presented at Blake Maternity Centre on March 21 with a serious head injury at seventeen days-old and admitted to hospital. A police investigation was subsequently launched and Stanley later died on March 28. Davies and Davis were arrested and charged as part of our enquiries.
Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Fiona Bitters said: “Hampshire Constabulary has worked tirelessly in this difficult investigation to secure justice for Stanley.
“The extent of his injuries at such a young age were truly shocking, no child should have to suffer in the way that he did. Stanley was found to have sustained 32 fractures to his ribs, 9 fractures to the bones in his arms and legs, and an 8cm skull fracture which was the fatal injury. These fractures appear to have been sustained on three separate occasions. A difficult decision was taken by the medical team treating him at Southampton General Hospital that his life support machines would be turned off when he was just three weeks-old due to the nature of his injuries. Sadly he later died.
“Hampshire Constabulary is committed to protecting all vulnerable people in our communities, including young people, and we’ve invested significant resources over the last few years into protecting and supporting children who experience abuse.
“This case highlights our dedication to establishing the truth and bringing offenders like Davies and Davis to justice. Our thorough investigation conducted by the Major Crime and Specialist Support Team has reached this successful outcome thanks to the dedication and tenacity of the officers involved. I would like to thank them and the partner agencies who have assisted our enquiries. Cases like this are difficult for investigators, because of the circumstances of Stanley’s short life, but I’m pleased that the professionalism of our officers was recognised by the Judge.
“Today’s sentences conclude this case involving Stanley’s mother and her partner at the time of the offence, with the knowledge that those responsible for his death will each serve a lengthy sentence”.
