Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Dear Resident,
Please be aware that we have had a vehicle stolen and a van broken into in the Greatham area of East Hampshire. On the same night we also had several sheds and a garage broken into.
These incidences all occurred overnight on Friday 30th November between 20:00 - 09:00hrs in Benhams Lane and Petersfield Road, Greatham. The vehicle stolen was a VW Polo - colour silver. High valued tools were stolen from the van and at this time nothing was stolen from the sheds or garage.
No suspects have been identified at present.
If you saw anything suspicious or have any information, please call Hampshire Constabulary on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800-555111.
Please can I ask that you check any local CCTV around the date and time stated. Can I also ask you to check any dash camera footage you may have active and fitted to you vehicle. Any positive sightings of suspicious vehicles or person(s) please forward to me via email -

Many thanks for your help.
Regards, John.

Please see below for crime prevention advice to help you to protect your vehicles, sheds and garages.

Car/ Van Security:

  • It might sound obvious, but make sure you lock the doors and shut the windows whenever you leave your car unattended.
  • Never leave any valuables visible - keep ALL possessions out of sight. Even if you know that there is nothing valuable in your jacket pocket or file left on the seat, a thief may try their luck.
  • Consider parking your van close to a hedge or wall in order to restrict access for anyone trying to get inside.
  • Use an approved steering lock or gear clamps.
  • Fit an immobiliser to the vehicle
  • Fit an alarm to the vehicle or alarm the vehicle by using a portable motion detecting alarm. (These can be bought from most DIY stores)
  • Fit a dual band tracking device that works on VHF/UHF and GPS to ensure that one tracking system is still functioning if criminals use GPS blocking techniques to avoid detection. Purchase devices to ‘Thatcham’ and ‘SBD’ approval to combat this type of vehicle theft, as vehicles equipped with a tracking device are often promptly recovered.
  • Use a “Pedal Box Guard” to encase the pedals when the vehicle is not in use.
  • Fit an on-board diagnostic (OBD) safe device, a secure lockable device that fits over the vehicle’s OBD port, inside the cabin, to prevent additional keys being coded.
  • Fit CCTV and park your van under it at night time. (This could be motioned detected and connected to your smart phone / tablet)
  • Fit PIR Lighting under where the car is parked at night time.

Shed Security:

  • Place all tools and garden equipment in locked sheds and garages.
  • Fit an anti-theft 'alarm padlock to the shed or garage door.
  • Secure more expensive items, e.g. mowers, bikes to an anchor point within the shed or garage. Use a chain linking all tools (if possible) and padlock using a closed shackle type security lock. Using a bike ‘D’ lock may be an alternative.
  • Mark all items with postcode and record serial numbers. e.g. UV pens or forensic marking kits. Register the details for free on
  • Take photographs of items such as statues and garden furniture if they are unusual, for easy identification at a later date.
  • Fit alarms – place a wireless PIR motion sensor alarm in the corner of your shed or garage and also a door sensor alarm. (This can be linked to your smart phone /tablet)
  • Fit a wireless CCTV system with motion detection (this can be linked to your smart phone)
  • Keep the structure in good repair.
  • Consider covering windows with curtains to obscure the view of the contents. Fit translucent window film if required.
  • Consider external lighting – Fit PIR Lights to alert when someone is in the area.
  • Ensure the garden fences are in good repair between neighbours to prevent unlawful access.
  • Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property.
