I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Antisocial Behaviour, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Afternoon all,
We’re urging parents to speak to their children about the illegal use of catapults, after a duck and pigeon were shot in a park in Aldershot.
We were called yesterday afternoon (May 6) to a report that four boys had been seen firing a slingshot at birds in Brickfields Country Park off Boxalls Lane.
The boys, described as white, wearing tracksuits and thought to be around 12 to 13, then ran off.
Colleagues from Rushmoor Borough Council attended the park and found a pigeon with a head injury. The bird was taken to the vets and sadly had to be put down.
A member of the public also found a dead duck that had been shot.
Another call was made at around 6pm, to report that a group of four boys, one with a catapult, were in the park.
They ran off from a member of the public in the direction of Highfield Avenue.
Anyone with information on this incident should call us on 101, quoting 44260212565, or you can report information via our website.
Intentionally harming defenceless wildlife is shocking and is illegal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
If you are carrying a catapult with the intent of causing harm, including to animals, that is also a criminal offence.
We want people to educate themselves and their children on this, because the consequences are serious. You are looking at fines or even imprisonment.
We will continue to work with our partners on this issue, as we know the impact it has on the local community and because it is an ongoing issue in this area and other parts of the force.
Please continue to report incidents to us.
If you have seen someone using a catapult against wildlife in your neighbourhood, please report this to police on 101 or via www.hampshire.police.uk
Even if a crime has not been committed at that time, it allows us to build a picture of the areas of the county where our wildlife could be at risk, and could assist us in intercepting and educating individuals around their use, particularly if they are being used recklessly by people.
If a crime is in progress dial 999.
Tackling anti-social behaviour can be a complex issue, and one which requires input and action from more than just the police. The Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 aims to put victims first, giving power to local people and enabling professionals to find the best solutions for their local area. The act provides the police, local authorities and other local agencies with flexible tools and powers that they can use to respond quickly and effectively to antisocial behaviour. These include: civil injunctions. criminal behaviour orders. public spaces protection orders. community protection notices. dispersal powers. closure powers.
The act also includes measures such as the Community Remedy and anti-social behaviour case reviews which empower victims and communities to have a say in the outcome of their reports and hold agencies to account. If you ever experience this issue or have information regarding an incident, please report it using our online reporting tools at www.hampshire.police.uk, or call the non-emergency number 101. Alternatively, you can stay 100 per cent anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their untraceable online form at crimestoppers-uk.org.
