A man who assaulted police and paramedics who had been called to treat him has been jailed for 32 weeks.
Gavin Gustar, aged 48, had called an ambulance on 5 March this year, which attended his home address in Bishop’s Waltham High Street.
Gustar then proceeded to grab, squeeze and twist one of the paramedic’s arms before spitting in his face twice.
Police were called and Gustar was conveyed to Royal Hampshire County Hospital where he assaulted officers by repeatedly grabbing their hands, and twisting the hand of one officer.
Appearing at Basingstoke Magistrates Court on Monday 9 March, Gustar pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting police and one count of assaulting an emergency worker.
He was jailed for 20 weeks, plus an additional 12 weeks of an activated suspended sentence.
Gustar had been given the suspended sentence back in November 2025 for a similar incident which took place on 3 October. On that occasion, health professionals attended Gustar’s address where he punched and spat on a paramedic, before threatening and kicking police who arrived on scene afterwards.
PC George Gissing, of the Winchester Priority Crime Team, said: “Gustar has shown a repeated pattern of violent behaviour towards emergency services – paramedics and police officers simply going about their duties and making efforts to treat him and ensure his safety.
“Assaults against emergency workers are never simply part of the job, and will never be tolerated. The emergency services are there to help people in their time of need and keep the community safe. They should never have to turn up to work in fear of their own safety, or be subjected to threats, aggression and violence.” | ||
