E-SCOOTERS |
||
Hello everybody
Recently, we have been receiving increasing numbers of reports and emails regarding the use of E-Scooters. We would like to remind you that it's illegal to ride a privately owned electric scooter in a public place. This includes on the roads, pavements, bridleways, cycle ways and pedestrianised areas. Privately owned e-scooters can ONLY be used on private land with the permission of the landowner. There are no exceptions to this.
E-scooters are classed as motor vehicles in law and as such, are covered by the same legislation and are subject to all the same legal requirements. This means that you would need an MOT, road tax and insurance to use one in a public place. However, currently, it is not possible to register privately owned e-scooters in this way. It is not possible to obtain insurance to ride a personal E-Scooter on the road or other prohibited space. If you do ride one in a public place, you are committing road traffic offences (as defined by the Road Traffic Act 1988) and you can be prosecuted. Your e-scooter can also be seized and destroyed.
We hope this helps to clarify the legalities surrounding the use of privately owned E-scooters.
