Officers carry out 10 searches and safeguard woman during proactive patrol in Basingstoke

Officers carried out 10 searches and safeguarded a vulnerable woman during a proactive patrol in Basingstoke over the weekend.

A number of teams, including the Dog Unit, local Neighbourhood Policing Team and Licensing Team, worked together to provide a visible presence on Saturday 12 April.

As part of the operation, 10 people were searched. Three women and two men were given out-of-court disposals after officers found either cannabis or suspected Class A drugs.

Meanwhile, a woman was dispersed from the area after being found in possession of a brick. Four other people were searched, however no suspicious items were located.

During the evening, plain-clothed officers intervened following reports of an assault in Market Square. It was reported a woman had been grabbed by a man during a verbal altercation. She did not support a police investigation, but was safeguarded by officers.

This operation was carried out to coincide with the dispersal order which was put in place for the town centre following reports of youth-related anti-social behaviour.

A total of four people were either ordered to leave the town centre area, or taken to their home address, under the terms of the dispersal order.

Basingstoke Inspector Charlie Ilderton said: “I’m pleased to say that Saturday’s operation was a huge success, with 60 per cent of our searches proving to be positive.

“Our officers weighed up a good balance of proportionality and used available powers and policies to ensure the large majority of people were able to safely enjoy their Saturday evening in the town centre.

“It was great to have the Dog Unit with us as the dogs have the ability to detect Class A drugs and spiking substances, something which is unique and a great asset for any night-time patrols.

“Further proactive patrols will take place over the next few weeks as our officers continue to do all they can to ensure Basingstoke remains a safe place to live, work and visit.”
