Hello,
We are aware of the local concerns raised following the annual Pony and Trap ride-out that occurred over the weekend across various locations in the New Forest – including speculation on social media around the mistreatment and deaths of horses.
We want to reassure local communities that we had officers patrolling the local areas in the run up and throughout the event at multiple locations. Our officers engaged with the event organiser extensively beforehand and during the event to raise any issues of concern at the earliest opportunity.
There are plans in place to discuss incidents of note from the event and how to plan for future events with the organiser and local partners including the District Council, Highways England, RSPCA and Forestry England.
Officers spoke to many members of the public over the weekend, some of whom raised concerns around animal welfare. It follows an incident whereby we took control of a horse on Saturday afternoon (10 August) which had suffered a broken leg in Ashurst. Sadly the horse was put down by a local vet. We understand community concern around animal welfare issues and encourage anyone with information about criminality, whether related to animal welfare or any other criminal activity, to report this to police. We will work with partners to ensure the most appropriate agency investigates.
There was a further report made to us late on Sunday evening (11 August) – at approximately 10am – of a horse having been caught on a cattle grid. Fortunately it was freed and uninjured as a result.
In addition, officers were in the Brockenhurst area responding to concerns relating to the safety of horses passing through yesterday afternoon. A cordon was put in place near the Balmer Lawn, and a number of local officers worked to clear the ground and direct the passage of the animals to ensure their welfare. There were a number of items present at the site, including nails and broken glass, which were removed by officers.
We ask people not to speculate on social media and to instead provide any supporting evidence to the police to assist with our investigation processes by calling 101 or using the report tool at www.hampshire.police.uk.
Thank you to the local communities for their understanding and co-operation during this weekend’s events. |
