Theft of car- security measures

Good morning,

Unfortunately, there have been a couple of vehicles stolen recently within the Farnborough area, therefore I wanted to take the opportunity to write to you and remind residents of how they can further secure their vehicles.

Methods can range in price from free- to expensive:

Free-

Parking a less desirable car behind a higher value car to make it harder to remove a car from a location

Keep car keys out of sight of windows, letterboxes and doors- this prevents them being hooked out via letterboxes, or easily grabbed having smashed a window.

Using target hardening methods you already own ( steering wheel locks / wheel clamps etc).

Removing valuables / documents from your vehicle.

Asking a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your home whilst you're away.

Not leaving cars alone whilst defrosting ( more relevant in winter)

Register your valuable on immobilise: The National Property Register, for Phones, Gadgets, Bicycles & More... (immobilise.com)

Lower costs methods-

Making use of a Faraday Bag / box- you place your keys into the box and it should stop signals being used to open your vehicle outside.

Purchasing a steering wheel lock / clamp

Window alarms

Garden Gate locks

Security lighting

Use of trellis above fences and gates ( adhering to local planning), defensive planting.

Security lighting

Higher cost methods-

Purchasing, installing and using a tracker system

Upgrading from single glazing to double glazing

House alarms

Home CCTV systems

Installing bollards / gates on your driveway

The above list is not exhaustive, if you are concerned or would like further advice, please reply and let me know.

Many thanks

PC Annette Barnett
